I actually have had fire on my mind lately. That's because I have the worst sore throat I've ever had. It feels like my throat is on fire. Not at all times, I only feel pain when I swallow, yawn, cough and burp. Other than that, it is just a dull pain. But the sharp pain is so sharp it feels like I have something prickly lodged in my throat and when my throat makes any movement, it pierces it in a thousand places at once. In my mind I picture this foreign lodged object looking like an everlasting gobstopper. not the lovely round jawbreaker candies I loved as a child, but like the one in the original Carlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. Only the one in my throat is sharper and has more points.
So I spent most of the day yesterday gargling/sipping water with cayenne pepper in it to try and cure my throat. Casey swears by this remedy (even though in the 9 1/2 years we've been married, I've never seen him do this.) It made me feel like I was going to spew fire from the back of my throat when I was done, but it seemed to help a little. Unfortunately, that relief was only temporary, the pain was back with a vengeance today. If I don't start to get some relief tomorrow, I may have to go to the doctor to rule out strep. I just hope I can get some sleep tonight. Maybe I should try gargling baby Oragel instead. It would probably have a better outcome than the cayenne pepper did. I just have to see if I can find it...

Something's Missing
My little Jace is growing up. I can't believe he's already losing his baby teeth. He lost both of his front bottom teeth on the same day (the 12th of this month). He was pretty excited but also a little bit afraid of getting his teeth pulled at first. After Casey got the first one out, Jace wasn't so sure he wanted the other one pulled, but both of his teeth were ready to come out. Jace really surprised us a couple of hours after the first one came out, when he was ready to try it again.
I just love watching him talk with those teeth gone and I love the subtle difference in how he pronounces his s and sh sounds.

A Day For Love
I absolutely love Valentine's Day, and this year, my day was perfect. We actually started celebrating a day early by going out to dinner on Friday night. I had to work right on Valentine's Day so Casey and I had a date the night before. Just the two of us went out to dinner and we really had a great time. It's so nice to be able to have an uninterrupted conversation once in a while. And our food was fantastic, I love crab legs.
Then on the morning of Valentine's Day, before I went to work, I made heart-shaped pancakes for the kids and let Casey sleep in. Once Casey was up we gave the kids a little Valentine's present and then we all indulged in some chocolate dipped strawberries, one of my Valentine's favorites. Casey and I also exchanged Valentine cards, we don't really do gifts for each other on Valentine's day. After that, it was time for me to go to work. The working part of the day wasn't the greatest, but since we took care of the date part a day early I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything. My Valentine's day had everything I needed to make it just perfect. I love it when that happens.

Manic Monday: Candy
Candy is a huge word for me right now, not because of Valentine's Day or because I've eaten a lot of it lately. In fact, quite the contrary is true. And that's why it's so huge. I haven't eaten any candy lately, and even more shocking...I've even passed, on treats like ice cream, sugar cookies, cake, and even pumpkin cookies; now that was a tough one. Hopefully I can keep it up. It's been really hard for me to not indulge in sweets. I have a major sweet tooth and usually don't even consider passing up a fresh baked dessert. But now, the feeling I get when I turn down, or avoid a dessert is like a little victory for me.
I've been exercising more too. Now don't get too excited, it's only been a few days (five to be exact) since I decided to do a better job of taking care of my body, so don't expect any kind of drastic changes the next time you see me. (In fact, I wasn't even going to share this decision with anyone because I didn't want to be scrutinized to see if my efforts are paying off or not.) Hopefully the changes I'm making will eventually have some outward manifestation to go along with them. But if not, I'll at least know I'm something good for myself.

Kid Talk
I love the things my kids say. They are so funny and creative. I had to put these on here so I wouldn't forget.
I was stirring some ground beef in a hot skillet while preparing dinner one evening, and Jace walked up next to me and looked into the pan. Suddenly he said, "Golly, that looks hot." I could barely reply. But I did manage to ask him where that word came from. He said it was on The Fox and the Hound.
Apparently that movie has some good lines because this next one was courtesy of that movie as well. Thank you Disney.
I was driving home from the store with all of the kids in the car and I had to stop at a red light a little faster than I anticipated. (But I didn't exactly slam on the breaks either.) Anyway, as I was trying to slow down in time, Jace cautioned me by saying, " Whoa...Easy there old girl." He sounded just like an old farmer trying to soothe a nervous horse.
This next one is a Jace original.
Jace: Mom, why are dreams called dreams?
Me: I don't know
Jace: They should be called night wishes....or sleeping wishes.
Me: Oooh I like that. I think that's a good name for them too.
Here's a couple from Camden
Jace was talking about how if he fell, he could break his arm. Camden's reply was, " If Jace broke his arm off he would go to the hospital...and get a new one!"
Every night this conversation takes place:
Me: Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite. (He likes me to say this to him because I say it to Jace.)
Camden; Don't let the bugs bite. But the bugs [are] outside. Hiding under the snow. In the mud. They won't get me.
Me: No sweetie, they won't get you. Good night
Camden: Good night
Any time Camden gets in trouble and goes to time-out he tells me this, "I not your best son. I only Daddy's best son." But when Casey puts him in time-out, then he's my best son and not Casey's
Even Alek has some good timing. He doesn't take enough to have a quote on here yet but he loves to nod his head yes. He usually does this when I'm telling him not to do something. But he also nods with me in agreement occasionally. For example; today I changed his diaper and told him it was so stinky. He wholeheartedly agreed with me by nodding emphatically with a very serious look on his face.

First Haircut
I've been meaning to get Alek's hair cut for a while. It was almost hanging into his eyes. But when he woke up from his nap last week with his hair looking like this:
I knew it was time for a haircut.
My sister cut his hair at my parent's house last Monday. He actually sat pretty well for it and didn't get too upset as long as I kept giving him pieces of teddy grahams. Here's the before, during and after.
I can't believe how grown up it makes him look. Between him walking, and his new haircut, he doesn't seem like much of a baby anymore.

All Smiles
Smiley List:
-Alek gives the best kisses. Ok, so his mouth is wide open, and sometimes he tries to bite my lips. But I can't help it, I just love his kisses.
-Camden has such a sweet tooth. I know this shouldn't make me happy, but his enjoyment of treats and desserts is so pure, I can't help but smile when I watch him.
-Jace can be such a little gentleman at times. There are lots of little girls to play with on our street and he walked one friend home since it was starting to get dark and she was scared. Another time he gave a little girl a ride to her house on his sled. We don't live on a hill, she sat on the sled and he pulled her home.
-Valentine's Day is coming up.
-We didn't get enough snow to have to shovel the sidewalk.
-I got a really great deal at the store.

Manic Monday: Wear
You would think I'd be used to it by now, but I was shocked when I went to Target recently and noticed that they already have quite a large swimwear display. Many stores do this type of thing. You can easily find swimwear and flip-flops in February and March, and snow boots are a piece of cake to find in August.
But that all causes problems for me. You see, I'm not mentally ready to buy swimwear when there's still snow outside or boots when I'm wearing flip-flops on a daily basis. So I wait until the weather necessitates the use of certain seasonal attire. But that's when such seasonal items are nearly impossible to find. Believe me, I've run into some problems finding seasonal items during the season they're intended for.
So I guess it's time to prepare for summer and start stocking up on summer clothing and footwear for myself and my family. Otherwise, we may all still be wearing our snow boots in June. But who knows, maybe people will just think we're getting ready for winter. After all, that's when the boot displays will all be fully stocked.

25 Random Facts About Me
I actually received a couple of tags for this on Facebook and I posted it there. But I also thought that since it took me quite a bit of time, I could get a little more use out of it by posting it here too. If anyone else wants to play along, please do. The instructions were to share 25 random things, facts, habits or goals about yourself. It's actually harder than it sounds like it would be, but really fun too.
1.I’ve always wanted to try karaoke but I’m too chicken to really go for it. Plus I don’t really frequent bars and clubs so that doesn’t help.
2.I had all of my kids without pain meds of any kind…on purpose.
3.I can’t eat off of metal eating utensils if I’m eating out of a metal dish, such as a skillet, pie plate or mess kit. It makes the silverware taste too metal-y and it stings my tongue.
4.I hate to call reading one of my hobbies. I feel like it makes me sound nerdy. But I really do like reading.
5.I’ve never been toilet-papering.
6.I hate leaving voice mail messages.
7. I love playing with play-doh with my kids.
8.When I was growing up we had a pet duck for a while.
9.I’ve always wanted to live outside of Utah but so far, that hasn’t happened.
10.Sometimes I think about going back to school for a Master’s Degree.
11.I kind of wish I hadn’t started this. I’m only on number 11 and I’m running out of steam.
12.I accidentally count things. I don’t have to end on any certain number or anything, I just count. I count things like the number of steps I take when going up and down stairs, when I chop vegetables, and how many items I put away as I empty the dishwasher.
13.I get dizzy quite easily, as in, ring-around-the rosies is too much for me.
14.Sometimes I like being able to go to work and get a break from the kids.
15.I have a bidet in my house… Don’t ask.
16.My husband and I own a cow.
17.I’ve never been to a drive-in movie.
18.I sometimes look at newly married young couples and think that I’m just like them. Then I remember that I’ve been married for almost 10 years and I have 3 kids. To them I'm practically a senior citizen.
19.I’m a major night owl.
20.When I was playing with Transformers with my kids yesterday I started to wonder if it’s uncomfortable for the Transformers to hold the positions they are in when they’re cars, airplanes etc. Then I remembered they’re not real and don’t have feelings.
21.I always compare things to other non-related things. For example, I see cars and compare them to shoes, fish, whales etc.
22.I worry that those last two items make me sound a little crazy but since I’m writing this at 4:30 AM, it’s not too surprising.
23.I’m not a very good at keeping the house clean all the time but I don’t feel guilty about it. But sometimes I feel guilty that I don’t feel guilty about it. (Again, refer to #22)
24.I never wanted to be a nurse as a profession but that’s what I am now.
25.This list was a lot harder for me than I thought it would be, and I’m really glad I'm done.

Tuesday's Manic Monday: Cloud
I just couldn't get anything on the blog in time for a Manic Monday post yesterday, so once again I have a Tuesday edition this week.
The Manic Monday word is always posted on the Manic Monday Blog every Friday. Even on weeks where I don't participate, I spend some time over the weekend thinking about the word for the coming Monday. This week was no different. But I still had a hard time coming up with anything for the word cloud.
The only thing that kept coming to me were the lyrics to Joni Mitchell's song Both Sides, Now.
"Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons ev'rywhere
I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on ev'ryone
So many things i would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions i recall
I really don't know clouds at all"
Honestly, the only reason I know this song is because I learned it in 7th grade choir. I've had parts of it stuck in my mind at various times ever since.
In an attempt to clear my head of the incessant repetition of these words and their accompanying melody, I thought it might be good to look up a poem or wonderful quote about clouds. But before I could even google 'cloud quotes', another, even better thought entered my head while the background music by Joni Mitchell continued. I realized that with this being my blog and all, I should write a thought or poem about clouds. So...here goes.
Constant only in their ever changing shape
Leaving behind wispy trails of mist
Occasional relief from summer's searing rays
Unpredictable with surprise showers
Deity's heavenly abode
Ok, so it's quite prosaic but I still couldn't come up with much and it's been a while since I've written poetry of any kind. But at least it's mine.
